I’m Claire, the artist behind Lucky Threads.
I draw with a sewing machine.
Lucky Threads began with a simple idea: what if a sewing machine could be used like a pencil?
Rather than using a digital embroidery machine to reproduce a pre-programmed design, I guide the fabric by hand beneath the needle, drawing directly into the textile with thread.
The result isn’t perfectly uniform embroidery. It’s looser, more expressive and a little unpredictable. Lines can wobble, overlap and change direction. Stitches build texture rather than simply filling a shape.
That’s exactly what I like about it.
I also experiment with light-reactive dyes, hand-painted fabrics, found imagery and layered textile processes, creating pieces that sit somewhere between illustration, painting and embroidery.

Illustrations, drawn with thread
There is no printed version of the artwork hiding underneath the thread. The thread is the artwork.
I use the sewing machine as a drawing tool, building each illustration line by line directly onto the fabric.
The result is tactile, textured and completely different from a flat printed image.
Lines overlap, wobble and no two pieces are quite identical.

02 / Dye + Stitch
Light creates the image. Thread brings it back to life

I begin with fabric coated in light-reactive dye and a negative image. When exposed to light, the image develops directly onto the fabric, creating an atmospheric, unpredictable result.
The dye doesn’t behave like a conventional print. It bleeds, shifts and changes intensity, leaving behind soft edges, tonal variations and imperfections.
Once the image has developed, I use free-motion stitching to draw back onto it, adding definition, texture and colour with thread.
